Swifts Hockey Club Inc - 15 years since the birth of our club!

​

In 2006, Swifts Hockey Club began. Co-founded by Nathan Hooper (Whip), Bronwyn Webb (Bonks), Bonita Tyler (Bub) & Susan Gregory (Skitzy), consisting of only one women’s A grade team. The club saw the addition of teams progressively from 2007 to make up the current ladies four competing grades, A, Reserve, R2 & A2 grades, Men’s A2 grade and juniors Hin2H, girls E, D and C grades.

In 2007, saw the introduction of our Reserve grade team and A grade begin to compete competitively being mid-season premiers and minor premiers. Joy Lewis took on a leadership role of President and the inaugural club person of the year trophy was renamed in her honor in 2016 being re-named the “Joy Lewis” trophy. This first trophy was awarded to Perdita Voight (Spud) in 2007.

In 2008, saw the introduction of R2 grade and all 3 of the Swifts teams A, Reserve and R2 teams take to the field in the grand final, with A grade being minor premiers and runners up. R2 grade women winning the clubs first premiership defeating Norths, coached by ex-Australian player Tammy Cole.

In 2009, Swifts saw A grade being minor premiers, mid-season winners and runners up. A grade won the first combined Ipswich/Toowoomba cup. R2 grade were runners up.

In 2010, Swifts Hockey’s second premiership was won by the A grade women, led into a hot victory by Brendan Smith (Smithy). Continuing the winning path in 2010 & 2011 and again 2 years running in 2013 & 2014. A grade also shared the combined Ipswich/Toowoomba cup. Our R2 team were mid-season winners, minor premiers and runners up.

In 2011, welcomed a double premiership by both A grade and finally out Reserve grade teams. A grade were mid-season winners, minor premiers and premiers. Swifts A grade again shared the combined Ipswich/Toowoomba cup. Reserve grade ladies were mid-season winners and premiers winning in an emotionally intense extra time win, going down drop offs getting to the remaining 4 players before Sheree Brown scored the winning goal.

In 2012, Swifts A grade were the only team to make the final, being mid-season winners, minor premiers and runners up, and again winners on the combined Ipswich/Toowoomba cup. Reserve and R2 went through rebuilding phases.

​

In 2013, A grade were back in top, dominating the year by being mid-season winners, minor premiers and premiers, and once again sharing the combined Ipswich/Toowoomba cup. Reserve grade were minor premiers and defeated Norths to become premiers once again, with Cristle Petersen & current President Kirsty Lenaghan (Lenny) co-coaches, saw the win in an exciting shoot out with Kirsty (Lenny) scoring the decider in sudden death shoot outs. R2 were mid-season winners but unfortunately were runners up.

In 2014, saw all 4 trams make the finals A, Reserve, R2 and A2 teams. There was a trio of premierships, hard fought by A grade, Reserve grade and R2 women, unfortunately A2 were runners up. A grade captain Ammo, along with Coach Mark Sharrard, aided in the premiership win. With Swifts R2 also being minor premiers.

In 2015, Swifts experienced another rebuilding phase, Reserve grade were mid-season winners, minor premiers and runners up, R2 grade were minor premiers.

In 2016, saw the 10 year anniversary of Swifts Hockey Club and a gutsy A grade team play against Wests in a battle of battles grand final, with the leadership skills of an injured Megan Bool (Bools) in a horrendous weather conditions Swifts were sadly defeated. However Reserve grade managed to secure the premiership in a game that saw a terrible injury and many tears of joy and pride for our club. Captained & coached by Kirsty Lenaghan (Lenny). Concurring over Wests 3-2 with the winning goal scored in the last minutes.

​

In 2017, Swifts Reserve and R2 teams both won premierships. Swift’s expanded with juniors from Hookin2Hockey (Hin2H) and 2 junior grades, E and D grades. Swifts Hockey community are excited at this addition and are exploding with pride! Encouraging our little Bluebirds to develop into our next generation Swifts. Swift’s introduced the Anne-Marie Callow Excellence award, awarded to junior players excelling in our great sport and ready to follow in Ammo’s footsteps toward a promising future in hockey. Líle Lenaghan received the first Ammo trophy, being Swifts first junior player representing Queensland.

In 2018, the season saw all teams finish in the top 4 with Reserve grade mid-season winners, minor premiers and runners up. D & E grades both made finals unfortunately both runners up.

​

In 2019, we saw the introduction of two A2 women’s teams due to the numbers of interested players with both teams playing a great season, always friendly and supportive. R2 ladies took out the premiership also being mid-season winners and minor premiers.

​

In 2020, although it was a difficult year for everyone, hockey and sport in general also suffered. Even COVID didn’t stop the Swifts Hockey Club fighting spirit and we were able to field 6 teams, Reserve grade, R2 grade, A2 women, E & D grade girls & combined C grade. We were able to capture a few milestones, we introduced our first men’s team A2 men who amazingly made the final and were runners up. We also became an Incorporated Club. With 4 teams making finals, R2 ladies going down to their competition nemesis Vets and A2 men also unfortunately a loss, but a very close game against Hancocks. We saw our first ever junior premiership our D grade girls coached by Cristle Petersen, over a mixed competitive Northern Western Strikers. Reserve grade ladies, took out the premiership in a tight and emotionally fueled penalty shootout, coached by Cyle Meloury.
